You Are a Child, Not an Employee

I caught myself doing it again the other day.

Mentally tallying. Adding up the good I had done lately, subtracting the ways I had fallen short, trying to land on some kind of number that would tell me where I stood with God this week. Like I was checking a balance. Like my standing with Him went up when I performed well and dropped when I did not.

And somewhere in the middle of that math, a thought stopped me cold. I was treating God like a boss instead of a Father. I was showing up every day trying to earn a paycheck of approval that, if the gospel is actually true, was never something I had to earn in the first place.

I think a lot of us live like this without ever naming it.

We treat our relationship with God like employment. We clock in with our good behavior. We hope our spiritual performance is enough to keep us in good standing. We feel secure on the days we did well and anxious on the days we blew it, because deep down we believe His acceptance of us is tied to our output. We are working, constantly, to earn something.

But you were never hired. You were adopted.

That is not a small distinction. It changes absolutely everything.

An employee earns their place through performance. Mess up badly enough, often enough, and you are gone. The relationship is built on what you produce. But a child? A child belongs. A child does not earn their way into the family by behaving well and they do not get kicked out for behaving badly. They are family because of who their father is, not because of what they accomplished. Their place at the table was never up for negotiation.

John 1:12 says "But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God."

Children of God. Not employees of God. Not contractors hoping to get the next assignment. Children. And Romans 8:15 drives it home even harder. "So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God's Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, 'Abba, Father.'"

You did not receive a spirit that makes you a fearful slave, always anxious about your standing, always working to stay in favor. You received the Spirit of adoption. Abba, Father. That is intimate language. That is the word a small child uses for a dad they trust completely. It is not the language of an employee nervously approaching the boss's office.

Here is what hit me when this really landed for me. All that striving I was doing, all that mental math, was not making God love me more. It could not. He already loved me completely, the way a good father loves a newborn who has not accomplished a single thing yet. The striving was not earning me anything. It was just stealing my peace and keeping me from actually enjoying the relationship I already had.

And I wonder if that is you too. Tired. Striving. Quietly exhausted from trying to earn a love and acceptance that has been yours since the day you came to Him. Working for a wage when you already had an inheritance.

I want to encourage you to lay that down today.

You can stop auditioning. You can stop performing. You can stop lying awake wondering if you did enough this week to keep God pleased with you. His love for you is not a paycheck you clock in for. It is a birthright you were given. The pressure you have been carrying to earn your place was never coming from Him. He has been waiting this whole time for you to just come sit at the table and be His kid.

Now hear me, this does not mean obedience stops mattering. It means the motive changes entirely. A child does not obey a good father to earn his love. They obey because they already have it, and love makes you want to. That is the difference between striving and surrender. One is exhausting and endless. The other flows naturally out of security. When you finally know you are loved, obedience stops being a way to earn something and becomes a way to love someone back.

So today, trade the timecard for your place at the table. Stop working for what is already yours. You are not an employee hoping to keep the job. You are a son. You are a daughter. You are home.

Come rest in that.

Much love and blessings,

Ramzi

Where This Meets Real Life:

Family

If you grew up feeling like love was conditional on performance, you may have unknowingly projected that onto God. Let this reframe both. His love for you is not earned, and it frees you to love your own family that same way.

Relationships

People who feel they must earn love tend to strive in their relationships too, always performing, afraid to disappoint. Being secure in God's unconditional love is what finally lets you relax into being yourself with people.

Mental Health

The pressure to constantly earn approval is exhausting and anxiety-producing. Resting in your identity as a loved child of God, rather than an employee earning favor, is genuinely freeing for a weary mind.

Finances

Your worth and your standing with God are not tied to your productivity or your income. You are not valued for your output. Let that take some of the performance pressure off how you view yourself and your work.

Physical Health

You do not have to earn rest, and you do not have to earn love. Caring for yourself flows from knowing you already matter, not from trying to become someone who finally does.

…and now lets end in prayer!🙏

Lord, thank You that You are my Father and not my boss. Forgive me for all the time I have spent striving to earn what You already freely gave me. Help me trade the exhausting math of performance for the peace of just being Your child. Teach me to obey out of love rather than fear, and to rest in the security of belonging to You. Thank You that my place at Your table was never up for negotiation. Help me finally sit down in it. Amen.
