The Weight You Stopped Noticing

Somebody mentioned a name to me last month and I felt my jaw tighten before I even registered why.

Just a name. Somebody I have not spoken to in years and honestly had not thought about in nearly as long. No recent conflict, no fresh wound, nothing to report. The situation between us was so old I would have told you with a straight face that I was over it.

And then my whole body answered the question before my mouth could.

That is the strange thing about old resentment. It stops being loud. It stops showing up in your thoughts or keeping you awake. It just sort of settles in somewhere and gets quiet, and you mistake the quiet for healing.

But quiet is not the same as gone.

I think a lot of us are carrying things like this. Not the big active grudges where you know exactly who and why and it is right there at the surface. The ones underneath. The friend who stopped calling. The family member who said the thing at the worst possible time. The person who got the credit for what you did. Years ago. Over with. And yet something in you still goes hard at the sound of their name.

The reason that matters is not the person. They are gone. They are living their life and almost certainly not thinking about this at all.

It matters because that old thing is still shaping you quietly. It shows up in how slow you are to trust somebody new. In the small satisfaction you feel when you hear things did not go well for them. In the wall you built after that season and never got around to taking down, because by the time the pain faded the wall had just become part of the house.

Hebrews 12:15 names it in a way I find unsettling. “Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.”

A root. That is the right picture. Roots are underground. They do their work where nobody sees them, slowly, over long stretches of time, and you usually do not notice a root until something above ground starts dying.

And it says corrupting many. Not corrupting you. Many. Which is the part I did not expect. Old bitterness does not stay contained in the relationship that created it. It leaks. It makes you harder with people who had nothing to do with it. It costs the people around you now for something somebody did to you then.

So here is the uncomfortable small thing I would ask.

Think of a name. Not the obvious one. You already know about that one and you are probably working on it. I mean the one that just surfaced while you were reading this, the one you would have said you were fine about.

You are allowed to be honest that you are not fine about it.

And then take it to God. Not to rehash the whole thing. Just to put it down. You can forgive somebody who never apologized, who never knew, who is never going to know. That transaction happens between you and God and it does not require their participation at all.

The grudge stopped hurting a long time ago.

That does not mean you stopped carrying it.

Much love and blessings,

Ramzi

This whole thing started as a few honest thoughts posted online and turned into something bigger than I expected. If it has been a blessing to you, a coffee goes a long way toward keeping it going.

Where This Meets Real Life:

Family

Old family resentment has a way of going dormant without ever going away. It shows up at holidays and in how you talk about people. Deal with the root, not just the surface.

Relationships

If you are slower to trust than you used to be, something probably taught you that. Name what it was instead of letting it quietly set the rules.

Mental Health

Carrying resentment takes energy you do not notice spending. If an old hurt is bigger than you can untangle alone, a counselor is a good place to work it out.

Physical Health

Your body holds what your mind files away. The jaw, the shoulders, the sleep. It keeps score whether you asked it to or not.

Finances

If somebody wronged you with money, that one tends to root deep. Let God handle the accounting and stop paying interest on it.

It stopped hurting. That is not the same as putting it down.

…and now lets end in prayer!🙏

Lord, show me what I am still carrying that I told myself I had already dealt with. Bring the names to mind that I have quietly buried instead of forgiven. Pull up the roots in me before they cost the people around me anything else. I want my hands free. Amen.
