The Kindness Nobody Saw

There was a woman in the parking lot at the grocery store trying to get a cart back to the corral in the rain.

Not a big deal. Except she had a kid on her hip and a bag that was clearly about to give out and she was doing that thing where you try to move fast and carefully at the same time and end up doing neither. A guy two spots down got out of his car, took the cart from her without saying much, walked it back, and got back in his car.

Whole thing took maybe forty seconds. Nobody clapped. She barely got a thank you out before he was gone. I only saw it because I happened to be sitting there.

And I have thought about it a dozen times since, which is more than I can say for most things I saw that week.

We tend to size up our good deeds by their visibility. The big gesture. The thing people know about. The generosity that gets acknowledged. And the quiet stuff, the forty second stuff, gets filed under things that do not really count.

But I think God grades this on a completely different scale.

Jesus said something about this that is easy to read past. In Matthew 6 He talks about giving and praying and doing good, and He keeps repeating the same idea. Do it in secret. Do not announce it. Do not do it to be seen. And then this line: "And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you."

Your Father, who sees everything. That is the whole thing right there.

There is no such thing as an unwitnessed act of kindness. Not one. Every single time you do something good that nobody notices, it is noticed. The audience you think is empty is not empty.

And here is why the private version matters so much. When there is no recognition available, your motive gets clean. You cannot be doing it for credit because there is no credit on offer. Whatever is left when the applause is removed is the actual state of your heart. That is why Jesus pushed so hard toward the secret version of doing good. Not because being seen is a sin, but because the unseen version tells the truth about who you are.

So think about your week. The thing you did that nobody thanked you for. The text you sent to check on someone. The mess you cleaned that everyone assumed cleaned itself. The bill you quietly covered. The patience you extended when you had every right to be short with someone. The prayer you prayed for a person who will never know you prayed it.

None of that disappeared. It went somewhere. God saw all of it.

And I want to say something to the people who are worn out from giving without recognition, because I know some of you are. Doing good that nobody notices gets tiring. You start to wonder if it registers anywhere. If it is doing anything. If you are just pouring into a void.

You are not. He sees it. He is keeping account of every bit of it, and He does not lose track.

Keep doing the small unseen things. They are not small.

Much love and blessings,

Ramzi

Where This Meets Real Life:

Family

Most of what you do for your family happens where nobody sees it and nobody thanks you. It is not going unnoticed. God sees every load of it.

Relationships

Be the person who does the quiet thing. The check-in, the ride, the favor nobody hears about. That is what real friendship is built out of.

Mental Health

If you have been giving with nothing coming back, that depletion is real. Let God fill you rather than waiting on people to notice. And let someone care for you too.

Finances

Quiet generosity, the kind with no name attached, is some of the most meaningful giving there is. It does not need a receipt to count.

Physical Health

Caring for others often costs you physically. Do not run yourself into the ground doing unseen good. God is not asking you to wreck yourself to serve.

Closing thoughts…

There's no such thing as an unwitnessed kindness. He sees all of it.

…and now lets end in prayer!🙏

Lord, thank You that nothing I do in private goes unnoticed by You. Help me do good without needing anyone to see it. Keep my motives clean when there is no credit on the table. And when I am tired of giving without recognition, remind me that You see every bit of it. Amen.
