The Day I Did Nothing
I sat down on the couch with a list long enough that I did not know where it started.
Not a crisis list. Just life. The things that had piled up over a few weeks because I kept pushing them to the next day. Some of them small, some of them not, all of them sitting there in my head stacked on top of each other until the whole thing had weight to it.
And I could not move.
I knew what to do. That is the part that still bothers me. I have written about this. I know you take one thing at a time. I know you hand the overwhelm to God. I could have explained all of it to somebody else that afternoon and meant every word.
I just could not get off the couch.
So the day went by. And then the sun started going down and a different feeling showed up, the one that is honestly worse than the paralysis. The one that starts adding it up. You had a whole day. You did nothing. What is wrong with you.
And now tomorrow is heavier than today was, because now the list has a full day of guilt sitting on top of it.
That is the cycle, and if you have been in it you know it does not break on its own. The overwhelm freezes you. The freezing produces shame. The shame makes the next attempt harder. Repeat.
I do not think we talk about this enough in faith circles, because it sits in an uncomfortable spot. It is not laziness. Anybody who has felt it knows it is not that. But it is also not something you can just pray away in an afternoon, which means a lot of people end up quietly concluding that something is wrong with their faith.
Let me say plainly what I wish somebody had said to me on that couch.
The problem was never that I did not know the answer. The problem was that the shame had gotten louder than the truth, and you cannot think your way out of a room that loud.
Romans 8:1 is what I keep remembering now. “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”
No condemnation. Not reduced. Not conditional on productivity. None.
Sit with how much that cuts against the voice running at the end of a wasted day. That voice is not conviction. Conviction is specific and it points somewhere. It says go do this one thing. Shame is vague and it points at you. It says you are the problem, and it never offers a next step, because it is not trying to get you moving. It is trying to keep you still.
The enemy does not need you doing something terrible. He will happily settle for you sitting frozen, buried under a pile of self-accusation, convinced you are too far behind to start.
So here is what I actually do now, and I want to be clear that I am still bad at it.
When I catch myself in that spot, I stop trying to attack the list and I go after the shame first. Out loud sometimes. There is no condemnation here. I am not behind as a person. I just have a hard day in front of me. That sounds almost too simple to matter, except the paralysis is not really about the list. It is about the weight you have attached to the list.
Then I pick something embarrassingly small. Not a real task. Smaller than that. Something that barely counts. One email. One dish. One phone call.
Zechariah 4:10 says “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”
Rejoices to see the work begin. Not finish. Begin. God is not standing there with a clipboard comparing your output to what you intended that morning. He is glad you started.
And starting is almost always the entire problem. Momentum is a real thing. One small thing usually becomes two, and two becomes an afternoon, and suddenly the mountain is a pile again instead of a verdict on your character.
If today is your couch day, I am not going to hand you a productivity system. You do not need one. You need the weight off before you can move, and that weight was never from God.
He is not disappointed in you for yesterday. He has one thing for you today, probably a small one.
Go do that one. The rest will keep.
Much love and blessings,
Ramzi

This whole thing started as a few honest thoughts posted online and turned into something bigger than I expected. If it has been a blessing to you, a coffee goes a long way toward keeping it going.
Where This Meets Real Life:
Family
If you have been frozen on things your household needs, the guilt is not helping anybody. Pick the smallest one and let that be today’s win.
Relationships
The text you have not answered in two weeks has grown in your head, not theirs. Send a short one. Late is fine.
Mental Health
Paralysis plus shame is a genuine pattern, not a character defect. If it is a regular thing and you cannot break it alone, talking to a counselor is a real and good step. There are tools for this.
Finances
Avoided bills and unopened statements grow heavier the longer they sit. Open one. Not all of them. One.
Physical Health
Exhaustion feeds paralysis, and paralysis feeds exhaustion. Sometimes the first task is actually sleep.

Closing thoughts…
The list did not freeze you. The weight you attached to it did.
P.S. If you had a day like that recently and you are still carrying it, set it down. You do not owe God a productive weekend and He is not keeping a tally of your wasted afternoons. Tomorrow you get one small thing, and that is enough to count as a beginning. He is not waiting on the whole list. He is just glad when you start.
…and now lets end in prayer!🙏
Lord, You know the days I sit frozen under everything I am supposed to be doing, and You know the voice that shows up afterward to make it worse. Quiet that voice. Remind me there is no condemnation here. Take the weight off this list so I can actually move, and help me start small today instead of waiting until I can do it all. Thank You that You rejoice over beginnings. Amen.
