D E V O T I O N A L

I did not think anyone was paying attention.

I was just trying to get through a rough stretch, keep my head above water, hold onto my faith when everything felt shaky. It was not pretty. It was not some inspiring highlight reel. It was just me, quietly deciding to keep trusting God on days that gave me plenty of reasons not to.

And then someone told me later that watching me get through that season was part of what pulled them toward God.

I was floored. Because from the inside, all I felt was the struggle. I had no idea anyone was watching, and I definitely did not think what they were seeing was worth imitating. But that is the thing about faith in hard times. It preaches a sermon you cannot even hear yourself giving.

Here is something worth sitting with today. People are not most moved by your faith when life is easy. Anybody can praise God when the bills are paid, the family is healthy, and the sun is out. That is not the faith that makes people stop and wonder. What makes people wonder is when they watch someone go through something genuinely hard and somehow still stand. Still trust. Still hold onto hope when hope did not make obvious sense.

That is the faith that preaches. And you might be preaching it right now without realizing it.

Think about Paul and Silas in that jail cell. Beaten, locked in chains, sitting in the dark for doing the right thing. And what were they doing at midnight? Singing. Praying. Worshipping God in the worst possible circumstances. Acts 16:25 says "the other prisoners were listening."

The other prisoners were listening. That is the detail I do not want you to miss. Their worship in the middle of suffering had an audience they probably were not even thinking about. And when the earthquake hit and the doors flew open, the jailer was so shaken by what he had witnessed in these two men that he asked how he could be saved. Their faith in chains led a man to Christ.

You never know who is in the cell next to you, quietly listening to how you handle your suffering.

It might be your kids, watching how you respond to stress and learning what faith looks like under pressure. It might be a coworker who is going through something similar and watching to see if this God thing actually holds up when life gets hard. It might be a friend who would never come to a church service but is watching your life like one.

Now, this is not about faking it. Please hear that. Nobody is asking you to perform a plastic joy you do not feel or pretend the hard thing does not hurt. Paul and Silas were not pretending they were not in chains. Real faith is not the absence of pain. It is trust in the middle of it. It is being honest that the season is hard and choosing to hold onto God anyway. That honesty is actually the part that reaches people, because they can tell the difference between a mask and a genuine faith that has been tested and held.

So today, if you are in a hard season, I want to give you something to hold onto that might help you carry it. The way you are walking through this is not just getting you through. It might be the thing God uses to reach someone standing nearby watching. Your endurance is a testimony. Your quiet decision to keep trusting Him is a sermon. And you may never even know, this side of heaven, who was in the next cell listening.

Carry it with that in mind. Not with pressure to perform, but with the quiet dignity of knowing your faith matters more than you can see. Someone is listening. Give them something worth hearing.

Lord, when I am in the middle of a hard season, help me remember that someone may be watching how I carry it. Not so I perform, but so I stay faithful. Let my endurance point people to You. Give me an honest, real faith that trusts You in the struggle, and use even my hardest moments to reach someone standing nearby. Let my life preach what my words sometimes cannot. Amen.
