Slow to Anger
I said something last week I wish I could take back.
Nothing dramatic. No shouting. Just a sharp little comment that came out faster than I could catch it, aimed at someone who did not deserve it, over something that in hindsight did not matter much at all. And the second it left my mouth I knew. You always know.
What gets me is not really the comment. It is the speed of it. There was no decision involved. Something happened, and about a second and a half later I had already responded. No thought. No filter. Just reaction.
And I keep thinking about that second and a half.
Because there is a gap between what happens to us and how we answer it. It is small. Sometimes it is only a breath wide. But it exists, and it is genuinely the most important real estate in your day. Everything you are proud of and everything you regret gets decided right there.
The problem is most of us have trained ourselves to move through that gap at full speed. Somebody cuts us off, says the thing, sends the text, and we are already responding before we have even considered whether we want to. We call it being honest or being passionate or just how I am. But mostly it is just a habit, and habits can be unlearned.
James 1:19 gets quoted a lot and I think we read right past how specific it is. "You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry."
Look at the order. Quick to listen comes first. Then slow to speak. Then slow to anger. That is a sequence, and most of us run it backwards. We get angry first, speak second, and listen somewhere around never.
And notice it does not say do not get angry. Anger is not the sin. There are things that should make you angry. Jesus got angry. The instruction is about speed, not existence. Slow to anger. Which means anger that arrives fast and unexamined is almost always the destructive kind, and anger that has been sat with for a minute tends to come out a lot more useful.
Here is what I have started trying, and I am nowhere near good at it yet.
When something hits me, I try to put one breath between the trigger and my mouth. Just one. That is not a spiritual technique, it is basically a speed bump. But that single breath is often enough to move the response from reflex to choice, and the difference between those two things is enormous.
And in that breath, there is usually a question worth asking. Is this actually about what just happened, or is this the fourth thing today and they just caught the accumulated weight of it? Because a lot of what comes out sideways at the people closest to us was never really about them. They were just standing there when the tank finally overflowed.
Proverbs 15:1 says "A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare." The response does not just express the temperature of a moment. It sets it. You have more control over how a situation goes than you think, and most of that control lives in the first thing you say.
So today, watch for the gap. When something provokes you, and something will, take the breath. Let the reaction slow down enough to become a decision.
Two seconds is usually the entire difference between a moment you are fine with and one you are still replaying at midnight.
Much love and blessings,
Ramzi

Where This Meets Real Life:
Family
The people you love most get your fastest, least filtered reactions. Slow down there first. They are the ones who feel it longest.
Relationships
Most damage in relationships comes from what got said in the first ten seconds. Delay your response and watch how many arguments never start.
Mental Health
If you are on edge constantly, that is worth looking at underneath. Chronic irritability is often exhaustion or stress wearing a different face.
Finances
Money conversations get heated fast. Take the breath before you respond, especially with the person you share finances with.
Physical Health
Anger has a real physical cost. Learning to pause is not just better for your relationships. It is better for your body.
Closing thoughts…
Between what happens and what you say, there's a gap. Live there a second longer.
…and now lets end in prayer!🙏
Lord, slow me down. Put a breath between what provokes me and what comes out of my mouth. Help me be quick to listen when everything in me wants to be quick to speak. Guard the people around me from my unexamined reactions, and give me the self-control to make my responses a choice instead of a reflex. Amen.
