Say the Thing Out Loud
I noticed something about a guy at work a few months back and never said a word about it.
Just the way he handled a situation that would have made most people ugly. He stayed steady. Handled it with a kind of quiet decency that I remember thinking, at the time, was genuinely impressive. I thought about mentioning it. Then the moment passed, and I got busy, and it went where most of those thoughts go, which is nowhere.
He left the company a few weeks later. And I never told him.
It is such a small thing. He is fine. It did not change his life that I kept my mouth shut. But it has stuck with me, because I keep thinking about how often I do that. How much good I notice about people and just never say.
We are strangely stingy with this. We will think something genuinely kind about a person, hold it in our head, and let it evaporate. And it costs us nothing to say it. There is no supply shortage of encouragement. It is free and we hoard it anyway.
Meanwhile, half the people around us are quietly wondering if anything they do matters. Wondering if anyone notices. Running on empty and assuming they are the only one.
Hebrews 3:13 says "You must warn each other every day, while it is still 'today,' so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God."
Every day. There is an urgency in that phrasing that I think we miss. Not when you get around to it. Not when the moment feels right. While it is still today, because today is the only day you are actually guaranteed to have with the people in front of you.
And 1 Thessalonians 5:11 makes the instruction even plainer. "So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing."
Build each other up. That is an active thing. It requires words leaving your mouth.
I think part of what stops us is that it feels awkward. Telling someone you noticed something good about them creates a moment of vulnerability, and we are not always comfortable with that. So we file it under things that are nice to think and weird to say, and we say nothing.
But think about the last time someone told you something specific and kind about yourself. Not generic praise. The specific thing. How long did you carry that? I would bet longer than they would ever guess. We remember those moments for years.
You have that in your pocket right now for somebody. You have noticed something about a person in your life and never told them.
So here is the whole assignment for today. Tell one person.
Not a general compliment. The specific thing you actually noticed. The way they handle something. The thing about them you admire and have never mentioned. Text it, say it, whatever. It will take you forty seconds.
You have no idea what kind of week they are having. You have no idea how badly they might need to hear that today. And you have no idea how long you have with them.
Say the thing out loud. While it is still today.
Much love and blessings,
Ramzi

Where This Meets Real Life:
Family
The people you live with hear your corrections far more than your praise. Even out the ratio this week. Say the good thing out loud.
Relationships
Tell your friends what you appreciate about them while they are here to hear it. Do not save it for a eulogy.
Mental Health
You do not know who is barely holding it together behind a normal-looking day. A specific word of encouragement can land heavier than you will ever know.
Finances
Encouragement costs nothing. If you cannot give financially right now, you can still give something valuable to someone every single day.
Physical Health
Praise effort and character, not appearance. Tell people what you admire about how they show up, not how they look.
Closing thoughts…
You've been holding onto something kind. Go say it while it's still today.
…and now lets end in prayer!🙏
Lord, help me be quick to speak the good I notice. Loosen my tongue for encouragement the way it loosens so easily for complaint. Bring someone to mind today who needs to hear something true and kind, and give me the courage to actually say it. Amen.
