He Is Singing Over You
The kitchen light was still off as the morning crept its way through the blinds…a slow gray turning gold across the counter. I stood there in the quiet, coffee in hand, listening to the house wake up around me.
And then my daughter came around the corner. Hair everywhere. One sock. Half asleep and mumbling something about her charger.
I did not say anything. I just watched her shuffle past me to the fridge…and I caught myself smiling like an idiot at nothing at all.
She had not done anything to earn it. She had not accomplished a thing that morning. She was just…there. Being mine. And something in my chest lit up over it anyway.
I stood there a while after she left the room and something hit me. If I can feel that over a half-asleep 13 year old looking for a phone charger…what does God feel when He looks at me? His child?
Because here is what I would have guessed before that morning. Mild disappointment. Arms crossed. Patiently putting up with me. Loving me because He kind of has to, the way you love a relative who keeps making a mess of things.
That is what a lot of us picture, isn't it? A God who is tolerating us.
That is not even close to what scripture says.
Zephaniah 3:17 might be one of the most underrated verses in the whole Bible. "For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs."
Read it slow, because there is a lot in there.
He takes delight in you. With gladness. He rejoices over you with singing.
Singing. God sings over you. That is not a God who is tolerating you. That is not a God waiting for you to get your act together before He can enjoy you. That is a God who lights up when He thinks about you…the same way I lit up over one sock and messy hair on a Tuesday morning.
I do not think we let that land nearly enough.
We spend so much energy trying to earn something that was already handed to us. Performing our way into an approval we already have. Meanwhile God is over here delighting in us, singing over us, calming our fears with His love…and we are still bracing for a lecture that is never coming.
You are not a project He is reluctantly working on. You are not a disappointment He is managing.
You are His kid. And He is glad about it.
So today, whatever kind of week it has been, let yourself actually receive this one. He is not frustrated with you right now.
He is delighting in you. He is singing over you.
Go ahead and enjoy that for a minute. It is true whether you feel it or not.

His delight in you has nothing to do with your income, your debt, or your bank balance. You are not worth more when the numbers look better. You never were.
Physical Health
He delights in you today. Not the future version of you who finally got healthy. This one. Right now. Take care of yourself from that place instead of trying to earn your way to it.

God is not tolerating you today. He is delighting in you. Let that sink in.

Lord, help me actually believe that You delight in me. Not tolerate me. Not put up with me. Delight in me. Quiet the voice that says I have to earn what You have already freely given. Let me live today knowing You are glad about me, singing over me, and calming my fears with Your love. Thank You for loving me like this. Amen.
