God builds kingdoms in kitchens. He shapes hearts in hidden places. Nothing is insignificant in His hands.
A Devotional on Finding Purpose In Small Things
The sound of dishes clinking against one another filled the quiet kitchen as I scrubbed away.
It was another ordinary moment, tucked into an otherwise busy day.
Water running. Soap suds. The same plates I washed yesterday and will wash again tomorrow.
My mind wandered as my hands moved.
Does this even matter?
In the grand scheme of life, these small tasks can feel so insignificant. Like filler. Like background noise in a story that is supposed to be about something bigger, something more meaningful.
I thought about the things I want to do with my life. The dreams I carry. The impact I want to make.
And here I was, standing at a sink, scrubbing dried food off a plate.
But as I paused, hands still in the warm water, God whispered something I needed to hear.
Nothing is insignificant in My hands.
Not even this. Not even the dishes. Not even the mundane, repetitive, unseen work that fills your days.
Lately, God has been showing me this: we miss the purpose in our lives when we dismiss the small things.
We are waiting for the big moment. The breakthrough. The ministry. The career move. The clear calling.
The thing that feels important enough to matter.
But God works differently.
He builds kingdoms in kitchens. He shapes hearts in hidden places. He uses the ordinary, the small, the overlooked to accomplish His extraordinary purposes.
Finding purpose in small things is not about settling for less. It is about recognizing that God sees value where we often see nothing.
The Bible is rich with stories like this.
David was tending sheep, not leading armies, when God was preparing him to defeat a giant. A widow’s meager jar of oil, poured out in faith, became a vessel of endless provision.
And Jesus, our Savior, spent thirty years in the quiet work of a carpenter before fulfilling His divine mission.
Thirty years of ordinary work before three years of public ministry.
That is a ratio we often forget.
God sees purpose in the everyday. And He calls us to approach even the smallest tasks with faith and love.
What Scripture Says on Finding Purpose in Small Things:
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” — Colossians 3:23
Whatever you do.
Not just the important things. Not just the visible things. Whatever you do.
The dishes. The emails. The commute. The laundry. The conversation with a coworker. The bedtime routine with your kids.
The job that feels too small for your gifts. The season that feels too quiet for your ambitions.
All of it matters when it is done for the Lord.
That does not mean every moment will feel meaningful. It means every moment can be faithful.
And faithfulness in the small things is what prepares us for the bigger things God has planned.
Jesus said it clearly in Luke 16:10. “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”
We want to be trusted with much. But are we faithful with little?
Are we showing up with integrity in the places no one sees? Are we honoring God in the tasks that do not get applause?
Are we doing the next right thing, even when it feels insignificant?
Because here is the truth.
God can turn the ordinary into something extraordinary when we commit it to Him. He takes our small offerings and multiplies them in ways we cannot see.
Finding purpose in small things means trusting that God is at work even when we cannot see the bigger picture.
So if today feels like just another day of small, mundane tasks, do not despise it.
God is at work in the ordinary. He is shaping you, preparing you, using you in ways that will only make sense later.
The dishes matter. The quiet faithfulness matters. The unseen work matters.
Because nothing is insignificant in God’s hands.
When we commit to finding purpose in small things, we open our eyes to see God’s hand in every moment of our day.
Finding Purpose In Small Things – Where This Meets Real Life:
Family:
Identify one small thing you can do for a family member this week to show love and gratitude. Whether it is a surprise note in a lunchbox, prepping their favorite meal, or simply offering to help with a chore, these little acts build meaningful connections. Your family does not need grand gestures. They need consistent, faithful love in the small moments. That is what builds trust and security.
Relationships:
Make time for a thoughtful, small gesture in your relationships. This could be sending an encouraging message, complimenting someone on something you admire, or sharing a memory that brought you joy. Even brief moments of intentionality create deeper bonds. Do not wait for the perfect moment to show someone you care. Small, consistent kindness is more powerful than occasional grand displays.
Mental Health:
Take five minutes at the start or end of each day to reflect on small victories. Write them down or say them out loud to God in prayer. Practicing gratitude for these moments can shift your mindset and build a sense of accomplishment. You made the bed. You showed up to work. You had a kind conversation. These are not nothing. These are faithfulness. And they matter more than you realize.
Finances:
Focus on one small financial change you can implement this week. Skip a coffee run to save a few dollars. Set aside spare change. Create a mini savings goal. These tiny steps add up and teach faithful stewardship. Financial transformation does not happen in one dramatic decision. It happens in a hundred small, faithful choices over time. Start with one.
Physical Health:
Small acts of care for your body matter. Drink one extra glass of water today. Take a ten-minute walk. Go to bed thirty minutes earlier. Stretch for five minutes. These are not impressive, but they are faithful. And faithfulness in the small things is what creates lasting health. Your body does not need dramatic overhauls. It needs consistent, small acts of kindness.
Closing Thought:
“God builds kingdoms in kitchens. He shapes hearts in hidden places. Nothing is insignificant in His hands.”
P.S. If you are reading this while feeling like your life is too small, too ordinary, too insignificant to matter, listen closely. God sees you. He sees the quiet faithfulness. He sees the unseen work. And He is using it in ways you cannot yet see. Do not despise the small things. They are building something eternal.
Prayer on Finding Purpose In Small Things:
Lord,
Forgive me for dismissing the small things. Forgive me for believing that only big, visible work matters. Help me see purpose in the ordinary moments. Teach me to be faithful in the tasks no one applauds. Remind me that nothing is insignificant when it is done for You.
Let my heart be fully present in the small things today. Whether I am washing dishes, answering emails, or sitting in traffic, let me do it as an act of worship. Use my ordinary faithfulness to build something extraordinary.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
